SVU Gu13s Take 1st in Richmond Capital Cup

The SVU Gu13 Blue team capped its season with a first place finish in the 2015 Capital Fall Classic in Richmond.  The team went undefeated during group stage play.  The first match ended with a victory over the Arlington Storm, outscoring the opponent 3-1.   Cecilia Mendoza opened the scoring for United with teammate Ava Galgano notching the final two goals of the match.  Goalkeeper Meredith Bowers made a critical save when a Storm player broke through the defensive line.  Bowers dove on the ball, taking it off the attacking player’s feet, to the cheers of her teammates and United fans.  The second match paired the 13s against a solid Richmond Kickers team.  Both teams had opportunities but neither scored and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.  United advanced to the championship match by defeating Fredericksburg FC ’02 2-0.  Mendoza added to her weekend tally by notching the only two goals of the match.  One score came after teammate Ashley Acosta Iscoa drove a shot from the top of the 18 that rocked the cross bar and dropped to Mendoza’s feet where she quickly finished it.

The championship match found the team tired but determined to take on the MSI Classic Rave ’02 from Maryland.  This match was the culmination of the team’s development over the season.  Demonstrating solid possession play and methodical attacking runs, United was able to maintain control of the midfield throughout all 70 minutes of play.  Tatiana Posada capitalized on the team effort scoring both goals for the Champions.  Showing great individual effort on one goal, she broke down the left side and beat the Rave defender, finishing with a quick shot before the goalkeeper could adjust to the coming threat.  Bowers came up big again after United struggled to clear the ball on a series of corner kicks.  During one of the corners a Rave player hit a shot bound for the goal, which Bowers skillfully deflected over the crossbar, preserving her third clean sheet of the tournament.  All 18 players contributed to the weekend play and it was a well-deserved result.
